  • Color: Silver
  • Maker: Original Wilton Armetale Company
  • Weight: 1.5 pounds
  • Modified Item: No
  • Country/Region of Manufacture: United States
  • Condition: Like-new, no scratches, damage, stains. This is understandable because of the material used in manufacture is ARMETALE, a non-toxic, tarnish-resistant alloy that will not crack, chip, or dent and withstands heat to 1000°. The plate was manufactured years prior to 2010 using an ancient painstaking process called sand molding*, whereby an impression formed in sand is filled with molten metal. Since items are individually cast and meticulously hand-finished, no two pieces are exactly alike. This production process does allow some random very small pits that show up during the polishing of the surface (if you look carefully, you can see a dozen or so in the main photograph).* No claim how plates after 2010 were/are manufactured.

    Description

Armetale is an aluminum alloy invented in 1963 by Ralph P. Wilton while running Wilton Brass Company (founded by his father in the 1890s). Armetale’s proprietary mix of more than 10 different metals can be worked to acquire the look of pewter or be highly polished to resemble silver. Products made from Armetale are functional as well as beautiful. The non-toxic, tarnish-resistant alloy will not crack, chip, or dent; withstands heat to 1000
    °;
and its ability to retain temperatures makes it versatile for heating, chilling, and food serving.
In a few years, the success of Armetale prompted the company to change its name to Wilton Armetale and move to Mount Joy, PA. Wilton Armetale's products were produced in their USA plant by using an ancient painstaking process called sand molding, whereby an impression formed in sand is filled with molten metal. Since items are individually cast and meticulously hand-finished, no two pieces are exactly alike. Each piece was stamped with the company name and an authentication logo containing the letters “RWP” enclosed in a circle.
    In 2010, the 4
    th
generation of Wilton’s were at retirement age, so they sold the company and separately their foundry where they made Armetale products. After the sale, the manufacture of the Armetale products had been outsourced to Mexico and China (maybe later brought back to the US?). In 2016, Lifetime Brands purchased Wilton Armetale and continued selling the products. They can be found today as the “Wilton Armetale Store” at the Mikasa web site (Mikasa is another brand owned by Lifetime Brands) and at many retailers.
This USA-made Wilton Armetale plate has been owned by my family since before 1980. Two of the photographs show the “Handcrafted in the USA” sticker, company name and Mount Joy, PA address, and the “RWP” authentication stamp. The Mount Joy address indicates this plate was made before the sale of the company in 2010.
Later plates also have use and care instructions on a label on the back:
    ·
Safe for cooking and serving food and beverages.
    ·
Wash by hand only with mild soap and water. Rinse with hot water and dry.
Please review all descriptions and examine the photographs before you buy; we want you to know exactly what to expect when this beautiful Wilton Armetale plate reaches you.
