Description
This is a very beautiful antique bronze plaque from the 1930s marked “AB” short for Arthus Bertrand of France, depicting the Winged Victory of Samothrace also known as the Nike of Samothrace. Inscribed “AB” on the bottom right corner and “Bronze”with
a triangle hallmark of the Paris Mint on the bottom side that signifies an artist proof of limited production.
Very well-made with great details and extremely beautiful.
The Winged Victory is a marble Hellenistic sculpture of Nike (the Greek goddess of victory), created in about 2 BC. Since 1884, it has been prominently displayed at the Louvre and is one of the most celebrated sculptures in the world.
Arthus-Bertrand is a maker of medals and decorations, founded in Paris in 1803 by Claude Arthus-Bertrand, an army officer during the French Revolution. The company employs nearly 300 people. Its distinguished clients include the French government, as the official manufacturer of the French Legion of Honor and it has made insignia for the Society of the Cincinnati and the Order of Lafayette.
