This fabulous dish, which was most likely used by a bellboy to deliver a telegram or message or left in the guest room for the guest to leave a tip. It was "obtained" (LOL) when the original owner went on a family vacation to the legendary Satler Hotel in Buffalo, NY back in the 1960s. She kept it in her china cabinet - and admired it often, but never used it.
Measures approximately 9" x 4.5" and is gray in color. The type is a little darker - more of a blueish gray.
Fascinating history on the hotel: The Statler Hotel
company was one of the United States'
early chains of hotels catering to traveling businessmen and tourists. It was founded by Ellsworth Milton Statler in
Buffalo, New York
.
Rooms were originally available at what seemed a very cheap price, leading many other hoteliers to predict the failure of the Buffalo hotel. The opening night price was as low as .50 for a guest room, leading to the slogan "A Room and a Bath for a Dollar and a Half".
Each of the subsequent Statler Hotels built upon this formula for success.
After Statler's death in 1928, the company built hotels in Washington, DC, Los Angeles, Hartford and Dallas.
Many of these hotels were designed by the architectural firm of George Post & Sons, the successor firm of
George B. Post
. In the mid- and late-1940s, pianist Liberace
"gained national exposure through his performance contracts with the Statler and Raddison
hotel chains".
The Hotels Statler Company, Inc., was sold to Conrad Hilton's Hilton Hotels
in 1954 for 1 million, then the world's largest real estate transaction.
A little about the manufacturer: Syracuse China/Onondaga Pottery Company was founded in 1871 when a group of investors bought out the WH Farrar Pottery Company of Geddes, NY. In 1966, the Onondaga Pottery Company changed its name to
Syracuse China, a name that had long been associated with their institutional and fine china lines. Since 1971, Syracuse China has been owned by private investors, Canadian Pacific, Ltd., (1978-1989), Pfaltzgraff (1989-1995) and Libbey Inc (1995 to present)
