This is a beautiful thing, especially if placed on a windowsill to allow the light to stream through and light up the blue cobalt insert. The cast metal casing and lid are adorned in all-over relief decoration with many types of fruits, nuts and leaves which makes me think its original purpose was to hold sugared almonds, dried fruits and so on, where the metal would be protected from the oils and sugars in the fruit by the glass insert. It was originally created in about 1910 by Jennings Brothers and marketed as a "chalice".
