Description
Offered here is a rare pair of very collectible Judd bookends: Columbia. She is adorned in her phrygian cap, which signifies freedom and the pursuit of liberty. ( I had to look that one up)circa 1920s
Before Uncle Sam, who became a recruiting icon during WWI there was Columbia. She was the national personification of the United States going back to the 1700s.
After Uncle Sam pushed her aside in the war bonds drive during World War I she became the model for Columbia Pictures.
Columbia’s link with United States goes back more than 200 years.
She is a wonderful conversation piece. And people will be impressed that you know what phyrgian means!
Last two photos show how Columbia was personified more than 100 years ago.
Painted cast-iron with traditional Judd verde finish.
This is not a common set and it is in great condition.
