Love the Hearts in base. Signed Max Rieg. #1023. Marked “Handmade “.
MAX RIEG WAS A GERMAN SILVERSMITH, HIRED BY THE NEWLY ESTABLISHED COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG FOUNDATION TO BE ONE OF THEIR FIRST CRAFTSMEN IN 1937. HE HELPED SET UP THE SILVERSMITH TRADE AND THE GEDDY FOUNDRY MAKING BRASS AND PEWTER BY HAND UTILIZING 18TH CENTURY METHODS. HE RETIRED IN THE EARLY 1950'S FROM WILLIAMSBURG, BUT CONTINUED TO MAKE HANDCRAFTED PEWTER IN STUDIO. MEASURES 5 1/8" ACROSS 1 1/2" HIGH.
Pictures are of actual item. The heart shapes in base are wonderful! There’s a ding in the side as you can see and wear on bottom. It’s a delightful bowl and shows it’s age!
From our smoke free and pet free home. Moving and need to lighten our load!!
I have not cleaned or polished this. It does not indicate the metal…only that it is handmade. Max worked primarily in Pewter, but also in silver and brass. I am not sure of the type of metal in this bowl.
