Rare Vintage COLONIAL LAWYER Cast Iron Doorstop Rosa May Pickard Waverly Studios. This is a wonderful antique figural doorstop of wigged colonial man with a purple jacket, yellow knickers and gold-colored triangle hat standing next to a podium. The figure is known as "Colonial Lawyer." It's in VERY GOOD CONDITION with its original paint. On the back of the base, between the words "TRADE" and "MARK," is "WS" inside a triangle, indicating it was made by Waverly Studios, in Wilmette, Illinois, a northern suburb of Chicago. Waverly Studios made doorstops, doorknockers and other cast items in the 1920s and 1930s. Artist Rosa May Pickard was the designer for Waverly Studio and held many of its patents. This doorstop has been listed as one of Waverly Studio's notable creations of 1925. It is also apparently referenced on Page 70 of "Doorstops Identification and Values" (1985) by Jeanne Bertoria. On the back of this item are the words, "PAT APPLIED FOR."
This original doorstop shows rather small amounts of wear and aging for a piece dating back nearly a century. Please review the photos as they are part of the condition. This is the best example of Colonial Lawyer I've seen. It has been in my family, presiding silently over doings on a shelf and then along a baseboard, for more than 50 years. A rare find and a great piece of Americana.
Weighs approximately 3 lb 8 oz.; measures 10" tall by 2-3/8" deep but 5-1/2" wide.
