Please email with any questions. Vintage Art Deco era spelter metal box by J B Hirsch. Designed as a female pirate sitting on a sea chest, it has a music box mechanism that plays WHISTLE WHILE YOU WORK when the box is opened. Since that song was written for the 1937 film Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs it seems this box was made circa 1937-1940. Box is 5 1/2" by 2 1/2" and is 3 1/2" high on small ball feet. The lady buccaneer adds another 4" to the height. Since the box is lined in wood I think it was meant as a cigarette box. There is some wear to the cold painted finish on the figure and the chest. Her face is celluloid with painted lips- the face has some dirt and stains on it and the paint on the lips is a little worn.
