    Bearberry is an
extremely cold hardy, slow growing, evergreen ground cover that grows generally 6 to 12 inches high and 3 to 6 feet wide. Over time, the Bearberry can form a dense mat, slowly spreading to cover a very large area to 15 feet in diameter. Leaves are small, glossy and dark green that turn red in winter. Bark is an attractive red-gray and exfoliates with age.
    Small
    white to pink, urn-shaped
flowers bloom in April thru May and are followed by bright red edible fruits in August. The fruits are eaten by birds and other wildlife, including bears, (Uva-ursi means bear's grape).
The green leaves and red berries are often used for Christmas decorations.
The dried, pulverized leaves were used as smoking tobacco by the Indians. A tea is also made from the dried leaves. Fruit becomes sweeter when cooked. The fruit can also be used to make a cooling drink or used for preserves etc. It can be dried and stored for later use.
