Description
For your consideration, a splendid antique, bronze and oak 1907 second place award wall plaque from the Wellcome Photographic Club in Dartford, Kent. The solid oak plaque has a bronze in high relief depicting Apollo in his sun chariot with three magnificent stallions. Below is an attached brass inscribed: " Seventh Annual Exhibition Awarded to E. G. Price for 'Street Scene Dinan' ". Dinan is a Breton city in NW France. Sir Henry Wellcome (1853-1936) was born in rural Wisconsin, had an early interest in medicine and health, got a pharmacy degree in Philadelphia and then traveled to South America to study natural medicines. He then traveled to London with a fellow pharmacy graduate and opened the Burroughs-Wellcome medicine company and developed the first medical pill/tablet they called tabloid (1880). They became a very successful, worldwide pharmaceutical company. Their first factory in Dartford had a Club for employees exercise, learning, and education. It included a large state-of-the-art photography lab and exhibitions were held for the co Photo Club. This plaque is from the company's 1907 exhibition. Wellcome was a philanthropist, entrepeneur, and collector. Upon his death, the Wellcome Trust was established to support medical research and training. It remains one of the largest medical charities in the world and continues to support photography through regular exhibitions. The plaque measures 6" x 8" and is in excellent condition. There is a rich chocolate patina on the bronze I was unable to photograph properly - it looks much better in person. Very nice indeed. Please see photographs. Priority shipment to the lower 48 is , elsewhere at actual cost. All offers appreciated and seriously considered. Thank you for viewing my listing.
