Description
Offered here is a rare set of Griffoul Foundry solid bronze bookends. The featured Indian is Red Cloud, one of the most important leaders of the Oglala Lakota from 1868 to 1909. He was one of the most capable Native American opponents that the United States Army faced in its mission to occupy the western territories. They are signed by the sculptor’s initials on the front side and are dated what appears to be 1911.
The patina is outstanding. A couple of slightly lighter spots on the base. Take a good look at the photos.
Griffoul and Gorham Bronze rivaled each other when it came to quality. Griffoul ceased producing artwork in 1916 when it began focusing its production on military needs for The Great War.
The patina is great.
The back sides are marked real solid bronze, cast by Griffoul Newark NJ.
See photos for detail.
The bookends are 5 5/8 inches tall, 4 inches wide and 2 5/8 inches deep.
