Description
Antique copper fireplace kettle (coquemar), French, 18th century. 8 1/2" diameter, 14 1/2" tall. 3 lbs, 11 oz. Coquemars would keep a quantity of hot water always at the ready in the kitchen, before or over the fire. After the 18th century, when spouted teakettles took their place heating water in the kitchen, coquemars lost favor and were rarely made again. They can either stand in the fire's embers on their three iron legs or hang above it by their bale handles. Coquemar legs usually have flanges that are drop shaped. It must have been a traditional style. They also have feet to help keep them from falling over. Caps are routinely provided with thumb spurs. Lids are hinged to their side handles to make pouring easy. Not retinned. Condition: used.Shipped with USPS Priority Mail.
