ANTIQUE FRENCH? ART NOUVEAU SOLID BRONZE HAIR PICK MAIDEN SARA BERNHARDT MUCHA VERY RARE!
Wonderful quality to the bronze medallion.
Details are still sharp and show no loss of definition.
Attributable to France circa the 1890’s and believed to be an interpretation of Alphonse Mucha’s rendering of Medee (Medea) as portrayed by the illustrious Sarah Bernhardt.
The last image is the original Medee poster by Mucha which shows Medea behind her veils with a wild look in her eyes, as she has just killed her two children upon discovering her husband’s infidelity!
Our Medea is also partially veiled and has piercing eyes, but the engraver took liberties with her headdress, replacing the spikes with the more expected flowers and dangles.
The bronze has taken on a delicious patina over the years, just the way collectors like it.
The hair pick comes from the estate of an advanced collector of Sarah Bernhardt memorabilia.
