Both a culinary and medicinal herb. Many know the benefits of drinking Hibiscus tea but not all know that the edible fruits that are dried for it come from the Roselle Hibiscus Sabdariffa plant. This red-blossoming hibiscus flowering plant is not only beautiful but useful too. A true gift from nature.
If you grow your own, you'll have enough fruit to make hibiscus preserves with cinnamon. Canning this makes for a tasteful homemade gift that your friends and family will remember for years to come.
Roselle Hibiscus Plant Care:
To care for Roselle Hibiscus, be sure to use loamy well draining soil and mulch the area well in order to retain moisture to the roots and ward off weed growth. Tip: Adding too much nitrogen will delay flowering, so avoid using soil mixtures with high nitrogen.
Harvesting: Pick tender calyxes for drying or fresh eating two weeks after the flowers have opened to ensure continuous high yields for the season. Leaves and stem shoots can be collected for drying and added to hibiscus tea as well.
Germination Procedure: Scarify seeds by knicking them with a knife or by rubbing the outside coating with sandpaper. Germinates in temperatures ranging between 75-85 degrees. Germination time: 2-3 weeks.
