This is a complete
SPECIALIZED
set of five

definitive stamps FVF and
MNH
. It contains all non-error printing varieties of Scott number
2194
Johns Hopkins.
The tagged sheet stamps are
perf. 11. Mouseover the image above to see examples of the tagging.
The stamps are from the
SECOND GREAT AMERICANS
series, which ran from 1986 to 1994. Hopkins replaced the Bernard Revel stamp. Dr. Revel was withdrawn from sale early following a controversial decision by the stamp engraver. Hopkins was the very first Great Americans issue to conform to 20-stamp panes.
One dollar
met various usages in combination with other other stamps. The design was reprinted many times but press information is incomplete. The stamps were first printed on the A Press, and later run on the C press, and finally perhaps on the F press.
Variations of the stamp were
dropped from USA Philatelic
beginning in 1993, but clerks could not tell them apart. The final printing went off sale holiday 1999. Popular Red Fox stamps were already in service as the replacement.
Complete sets are becoming more difficult to assemble. Brookman catalogue posted huge price increases in 2014.
