Description
This 1981 set of unused Space Achievement 18 cent vintage US postagestamps in USPS commemorate issue book.. These stamps were issued on
May 21st, 1981 at Kennedy Space Center, Florida. They were designed by
Robert T. McCall and modeled by Clarance Holbert. Each stamp depicts
various space exploration images. Four large stamps make up a center “main”
picture acting as a space shuttle commemorative and each corner holds
a smaller space stamp.
The four large stamps show the US Space Shuttle in different modes of operation.
The main theme involves the first actual “in space” flights of the space shuttle while
also paying tribute to 20 years of manned U.S. Space Exploration.
The smaller stamps honor the efforts of those that took part in the Moonwalk,
Skylab, and the Pioneer space missions.
The large stamps read “Benefiting Mankind” in white with “USA 18c” in black. The
smaller stamps all have “USA 18c” in white. Each one of the four pictures has
a different name written in black. They are: “Exploring Moon”; “Understanding the Sun”;
“Probing the Planets”; and “Comprehending the Sun.”
Each large stamp measures 1 1/4" tall by 1 1/2" wide (3.2cm x 3.8cm) . The smaller
stamps measure 1 1/4" tall x 1" wide (3.2cm x 2.5cm) . The full sheet measures
9" tall x 10 1/4" wide (22.9cm x 26.0cm) .
These stamps are “mint” – meaning they have never been used. All perforations are
intact. They have the original glue and are sealed in the USPS limited edition Space Book.
Included professionally framed and matted is the original USPS poster showing the
commemorative stamps, it is folded so the stamps do not appear, but when unfolded appears
as follows:
It is in sealed condition taken straight from display at the post office and was professionally matted and
framed in a custom aluminum frame. This is a one of a kind offer and the posters were extremely rare
with only some of the post offices having received them for display. Almost all of these were torn or
were destroyed.
This will have to be carefully packaged and shipped, it is a museum quality display item, and would
equally enrich a home while being a valuable and most rare collectable for a serious space collector.
