BROOKMAN CATALOGUE VALUE IS
.85 - .90
The Auction:
This is a
SPECIALIZED
set of 17 sheet, booklet and coil stamps FVF and
MNH
. It contains
regular issue
(definitive) singles from the 1970-74 rate period Scott 1393 to 1402. All of the shiny and dull (dry) gum varieties issued during this period are included in this complete set.
This was a quiet time between the Prominent and Americana Issues when we really didn't have a grand set to collect. Some consider these part of the PA set, but they were issued separately. The designs feature famous individuals such as
Eisenhower, Franklin, LaGuardia, Pyle and Blackwell.
Scott catalogue does not generally issue separate catalogue numbers for dull gum types. Brookman uses "letter v" for variety as standard practice. We have used letter v here when appropriate. We recommend our 74 regular set to those that do no care about specialized varieties. The set does not include precancels.
Some of these beautiful stamps have very fine centering. There is a
30% premium
for VF but we offer better quality at our regular low price!
The specific catalogue numbers of these stamps are:
1393, 1393a, 1393D, 1394, 1395, 1396, 1397, 1398, 1399, 1400, 1401 and 1402!
See below to learn more about dull gum.
Dull gum is sometimes called
Dry gum or matte gum
to avoid confusion with
Dull gloss gum
. Dull gum was first issued in 1971 for the
Prominent Americans
issue and by the late 1970s was used for most regular printings. The new experimental gum solved problems with sticking in humid climates and eliminated the need for interleaving in booklets. At that time all dull gum was PVA (polyvinyl acetate).
However, with shiny gum it had always been easy to tell them apart from used, now it had become a little tricky. As the expression goes,
a picture is worth a thousand words
so computer enhanced photos follow to better explain.
One way is to turn the stamp over and use an ordinary
light bulb or flashlight
. Simply shine the bright light at a
glancing angle
across the back surface of the stamp to pick up any tiny shadows in the gum. You may be surprised to find that dry gum on this issue has distinct diagonal ridges, as seen below. The peaks and valleys run at about a 45° to 50° angle and a magnifier can be used if still not clear. These gum ridges wash off when soaked, so un-gummed and used stamps are clearly flat in comparison.
Used stamps are flat no ridges

We reserve the right to refuse service to anybody at any time. Stamp collectors as a whole are very honest people. A few bad apples attempt to manipulate the system for personal gain or other reasons. These parties are blocked.
We always leave feedback for each positive transaction. There is never a need to ask us. We never send messages to customers asking for feedback but hope that they will choose to leave a positive. Feedback is left after you have your stamps and when we know that all is well.
Shipping is generally free to USA. We actually lose money on shipping and have not raised our rates in 15 years!
The security of your order is guaranteed by our special packaging. Tracking provided when available.
We do ship Internationally but not to every country in the world. Please ask about rates before purchasing. Large International orders will be shipped via US Registered Mail at current rates. Please understand that
Registered International

We always ship at earliest convenience. This means that a mail-run may occur multiple times a day. We have no control over the speed of mail, but have found the USPS to be very reliable. We strive to be competitive in all aspects of the eBay market. If for any reason you are unhappy we hope that you will contact us for quick resolution.
