Description
VERY LARGE AND HEAVY ANTIQUE ENGLISH PEWTER 16 1/2 " CHARGER DISH PLATE, CIRCA 1700-1750's WITH BLAZON OF PORCUPINE.Description:
This is a very large and heavy early to mid 18
th
century English pewter plate or charger with owner's Heraldry Blazon of a porcupine inscribed on the surface. I have researched this blazon and determined it may be for the family of Grylls that were prominent in Cornwall, England. The Grylls coat of arms was established with William Gryllis, esq. of Tavistock on June 13, 1577 with the name spelling changing over the years to Grylls (See pic attached). This charger would date before the time of Reverand Richard Gerveys Grylls who would have likely used this charger if this is the correct blazon. I have also seen this same porcupine used to depict The French King Louis XII, but not likely, as the royal porcupine seems to be accompanied with a crown above. Viewer's to make their own determination for the blazon on this charger. The Grylls family is well documented in England and can be found on-line.
