    Description

    This is a
    stunning antique
Pickle Caster made by the Knickerbocker Manufacturing Company.  I have had many people ask..."What in the world is that?"  Then you can tell them the following....
The company was founded in 1894 in Port Jarvis, New York, and was a successor to the James Babcock Company.  Before 1904 the firm became the Knickerbocker Silver Company.  This piece offered is trademarked on the bottom as Knickerbocker Manufacturing Company with a fancy script "K", which puts the manufacture somewhere between 1894 and 1904 when the company changed names.
    This
    4 piece pickle caster
is a very nice antique piece.  In addition to the mark mentioned above, it is stamped as being quadruple plate.  It appears the silver plate was applied over copper, as can be seen showing in some areas especially inside the base and under the bottom.
This pickle caster features an exquisitely patterned Vaseline glass jar.  The silver plate holder features tiny floral decorations and a ribbed bottom.  The tongs have a larger floral pattern in the center and what appears to be fowl feet ends.  An unusual horse finial is on the lid.  The overall height of the piece is 11 1/2 inches while the width is about 5 1/4 inches at the scrolled portion with the base about 4 1/2 inches in diameter.  The glass piece is about 4 1/4 inches tall and about 3 1/4 inches in diameter.  The rim is a little smaller at 3 1/8 inches because it is smooth as opposed to the relief design over the rest of the jar.
I have provided plenty of pictures for your inspection.  There is a pleasing tarnish to the holder and lid.  It appears the horse finial was reattached to the lid at some point in the past.  The glass is excellent with no cracks or chips.
