It is the

Frederick Douglass scarce
magenta color error stamp. This variety has often been misidentified because there is a normal range of variation within the 1290 color. We guarantee accuracy as with all of our specialized definitives.
The 1973
Prominent Americans
stamp was assigned number status based on the magenta color. It is much brighter than the common
rose lake
color of earlier 1290 stamps. They are only known to come from tagged plates
37604
and
37605
. Please see below for comparison. Magenta colored 15c O. W. Holmes is a suitable color reference. Normal 1290 sold separately.
