Christmas Angel with Trumpet
stamp. Tagged Nov. 15 1965, the Giori press single is
perforated 11.
The
1965
Christmas
stamps were first printed without, and then with overall tagging. Untagged stamps are more common and sold separately. Tagging (or phosphorescent ink) is detectable by high speed processing equipment and used to speed up automated mail.
It was practical to add tagging to help with the huge burden of extra letters mailed during the busy holiday season. The experiment was a success and soon all (First Class) stamps were issued with tagging. The chemicals in tagging are
invisible
but were known to tint the paper yellow or brown. This can be seen in the stock image and is typical for the issue. All items are guaranteed.
Five
cents met the First Class 1oz domestic letter rate from Jan. 7, 1963 until Jan. 7, 1968.
