The Auction:
This is a
SPECIALIZED
set of two
1 cent
definitive stamps FVF and
MNH
. It contains both printing varieties of Scott number
1031*
George Washington
. The Rotary Press stamps are
perf. 11 x 10½.
The stamps are from the
Liberty Series
sheet set which ran from
1954
to
1968
. The definitive regular issues were printed first wet and reprinted later using a dry process. Generally the wet prints have a darker appearance and thinner paper. The dark green stamps were available to be used in combination with other stamps to meet various usages like Library rate (additional pound). The precancelled version paid
Third Class Nonprofit
bulk rate beginning 1954. Precancels when available are sold separately in the
TBR
store.
*In 2015 Scott changed many Liberty catalogue numbers after a half century.
The rationale is that the first variety printed should retain the major number
1031.
In this case wet stamps were printed before dry so the catalogue numbers needed to be flipped. The minor number
1031b
now refers to the common dry print variety.
It will take years for the number changes to catch on within the philatelic community. Many dealers will continue to use the old numbers while some will switch to the new numbers causing confusion. Rest assured that our identification is current and accurate.
